Beat-Herder Festival 2006

the vast majority of the crowd are the modern equivalent of hippies, who appeared to be able to get out of their skulls drinking tea and coffee

A fantastic weekend...Hard work...I'll rephrase that, long hours with not a lot to do, apart from Saturday evening into the early hours of Sunday morning, turfing out gatecrashers. No problems cos, unlike the security people we made it plain that there would be no prisoners.

The organization was pretty good, a couple of the security people didn't have much of a clue, but the majority were pretty good. I think our main advantage was that most of the punters didn't quite know what to make of us cos we kept popping up all over the place, not wearing yellow jackets and, of course the vast majority of the crowd are the modern equivalent of hippies, who appeared to be able to get out of their skulls drinking tea and coffee. We did see the odd bong but it was pretty well hidden...I'll write a bit more when the old bones have recovered...Should be around September then.

I knew how the event was gonna pan out, when Nelly wanted to go to the pub before we even got on site, and he managed to do so, while Naz and I waited for him to bring the tent and my smoke, which was sitting in his boot.

Naz and I rolled in on the Trike and set our stall out as hard and tough bikers however, the pale pot belly hanging over my belt tried its best to ruin the impression.

We didn't bother with tents as it happens. We threw the club shelter up and slept in it no probs. In fact come the morning it was positively hot

The gig was spread around a wood, a camping field, a rally field and a car park field that also held showers and a sauna...I shit you not.. a mobile hippy wood burning sauna and showers were on site..free of charge but donations accepted. They even had a fair sized paddling pool that the kids loved.

a wood, a camping field, a rally field and a car park field that also held showers and a sauna...I shit you not!

The wood was pretty splendid with all manner of enchanting things to look at from papier mache animals, BIG wooden chairs spread around to colourful plant pot holders with messages on and even a little chill-out-house with a tunnel entrance to it through the bush.

However, the most amazing thing about the woods was the bar in it. Hard to explain but it was a PIT in the ground covered by a corragated roof hut. To get served U had to get on yer hands and knees and then it was only spirits they were serving but to have a chilled G&T in a forrest was quite surreal.

Like Naz said...the security and marshalling was sorted (and we were only used as and when the locals invaded...free-of-charge)

Nelly did a magic act on Saturday and was nowhere to be seen and then Gem and Mick turned up. Saturday turned into Sunday morning very quickly and after a few hours kip starting at around 6 / 7 am it was time to think about leaving. Mick had already left for work and then Nelly turned up again!

There's nowt as queer as folk.
